Mexicans Kill American.

New York Times 100 years ago today, August 23, 1913:
Edward Hayes of Buffalo Slain, Refugees Say, by Federals.
EL PASO, Texas, Aug. 22.— Edward Hayes of Buffalo, timekeeper for the Madera Lumber Company, was murdered by Mexican Federals under Francisco Cordova in Madera when they took the town from Pancho Villa's rebels last week, according to Americans arriving here to-day. The Federals also killed an American negro because he tried to prevent them from taking the company horses from the corral.

BUFFALO, Aug. 2.— Edward Hayes, 20 years old, a bookkeeper, left here for Mexico last June. His father, Edward Hayes, Sr., of Pascal Street. Buffalo, has not heard from him since then, but is inclined to think the murdered man is his son. Hayes worked for a bookmaker at Juarez race track last Winter and after the racing season closed obtained employment as a bookkeeper with an American firm. He visited home last June for a short time.
