New York Times 100 years ago today, January 2, 1913:
Removed from Guards Command and Ordered from St. Petersburg.
By Marconi Transatlantic Wireless Telegraph to The New York Times.
LONDON, Jan. 1.— A dispatch to The Daily News says that the St. Petersburg official gazette contains the announcement that the Czar's brother, the Grand Duke Michael, has been removed from the command of his mounted guards regiment and directed to reside for eleven months in the provinces or abroad.
This marks the imperial displeasure at the Grand Duke's recent marriage with Mme. Sheremetievskaia. It is understood that the orthodox priest who celebrated the marriage will also be punished.
The prolonged exclusion of the Grand Duke Michael from the capital is doubtless intended to prevent his appearance at the forthcoming celebrations of the tercentenary of the Romanoff dynasty, or his benefiting by the amnesties which are expected on that occasion.
