To Command In The Air.

New York Times 100 years ago today, October 8, 1912:
Lieut. Arnold Will Direct Artillery Fire from Flying Machine.
Special to The New York Times.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 7.— Lieut. Henry H. Arnold of the Signal Corps Aviation School will leave here for Fort Riley, Kan., on Friday, to attempt to direct the fire of artillery from a flying machine while at an altitude of at least 2,500 feet. He will be accompanied by Lieut. Thomas De Witt Milliner, another of the army aviators, who will assist him in the work. They are arranging a series of signals to be used in communicating with the artillery while they are in the air.
The Wright biplane in which Lieut. Arnold will fly at Port Riley was used by the Lieutenant this afternoon in a flight from the War College in Washington to College Park, Md., a cross-country trip of twelve miles. Lieut. Arnold flew the distance in sixteen minutes.
