Two Men Leave Chicago to Enlist at the Greek Legation.
CHICAGO, Oct. 21.— Two aviators, John Schaefer of New Orleans and Robert Elliott of Brooklyn, N. Y., left here today for Washington, where they will enlist at the Greek Legation for service in the Greek army.
The arrangement was made through the Greek Consulate here. The men are to fly in two of the aeroplanes shipped to Greece several weeks ago.
PUBLICITY LAW OPERATIVE.
Fifteen-Day Period for Showing Campaign Gifts Has Now Begun.
Perry Belmont, who has for several years been an advocate of greater publicity concerning campaign contributions, explained in a talk to the Woodrow Wilson College Men's League at the Hotel Imperial yesterday afternoon just how the recently passed act of Congress would affect the present Presidential candidates.
The new law went into operation yesterday morning, he said, under a clause requiring the first publication of contributions to be made not earlier than fifteen days or later than ten days before election. The fifteen-day period, Mr. Belmont said, commenced yesterday, and the final date for the first publication will expire on Friday. Subsequent publications must be made every sixth day before election, and once again within thirty days after election.
"In case any party fails to publish its contributions," said Mr. Belmont, "or any group of voters feel that a full statement has not been made, then an application to a Supreme Court Justice will bring about a summary inquest into the status of the offending party's funds. Any candidate may petition for such an inquest, or any five voters may petition for it jointly. This condition is brought about not through the Federal statute, which sadly needs such a provision, but through the New York State law under which all committees, whether National or State, operating in New York State, are compelled to give an accounting of their funds."
Mr. Belmont said he was now hard at work to secure the enactment of a clause in the Federal statute similar to that of the New York State statute. Mr. Belmont left for Illinois last night on a speaking tour in support of Gov. Wilson's candidacy.
