Italy For A Free Albania.

New York Times 100 years ago today, November 18, 1912:
But Sentiment as to Austria and Servia Is Evenly Divided.
ROME, Nov. 17.— Public opinion in Italy with regard to the Austro-Servian difficulty is about equally divided. There is a strong sentiment which favors the Balkan State, while there is also a noticeable leaning toward the defense of Albania against Servian aspirations.
Among Italians generally distrust is apparent regarding Austria's policy, but the opinion in official circles is that it would be to Italy's interest if the slogan "Albania for the Albanians" should be put into effect, and that if the balance in the Adriatic is not to be disturbed Italy would do well to proceed in agreement with Austria. It is pointed out that Austria is not adventurously inclined, and will content herself with equitable solutions, acceptable to Servia, so far as a commercial outlet to the Adriatic is concerned.
Italy, however, has not engaged herself to uphold Austria's pretensions to economic privileges, and will defend, if necessary, Servia's economic liberty.
As for Albania, Italy will see that that country is really independent and does not become a mere vassal of Austria.
