Shipbuilding Statistics.

New York Times 100 years ago today, July 13, 1912:
1,702 Merchant Ships Constructed In This Country in the Year.
A statement by the Department of Commerce and Labor shows that American builders completed 1,702 merchant ships of all descriptions in the last year. The gross tonnage of these vessels was 243,792. In the previous year the number constructed was 1,208 and the gross tonnage 302,158. Thirty-five steel vessels were built on the Great Lakes. As usual, a majority of all the vessels constructed, were small wooden steamers.
The sailing vessels built in this country just offset the American sailing tonnage lost in that period. Sailing craft aggregating 50,000 gross tons were lost.
