Senator Root to Renew Fight Against Toll Remission.
WASHINGTON. April 8.— Senator Root has reintroduced his bill of last session for repeal of that provision of the new Panama Canal law which gives American coastwise ships freedom from toll charges.
Representative Sims to-day reintroduced his bill to abolish the Commerce Court, and another to repeal the clause of the Panama Canal Act. exempting American coastwise ships from tolls. He will endeavor to have both approved as caucus measures.
Senator Thomas to-day introduced a bill designed to provide that in all civil or criminal actions under the Sherman law, whether pending or yet to be begun, the United States courts shall interpret the Sherman law "according to its terms, language, and provisions as the same was originally enacted and not otherwise." The bill is aimed at the Supreme Court's "rule of reason," as introduced in the Standard Oil case.
Senator Works to-day reintroduced his bill for a Constitutional amendment to limit the President's tenure to one six-year term.
Senator Sutherland reintroduced the Workmen's Compensation bill.
