Steamship Companies Ask for Space to Store Coal.
WASHINGTON, April 7.— The German steamship lines are already preparing for the opening of the Panama Canal, a representative of fifteen of them having applied to the Canal Commission for sufficient space on the Isthmus to store 15,000 tons of coal.
The commission is drawing its plans for the establishment of an adequate coal supply for shipping, encouraging individual dealers to establish their own plants, and framing regulations to prevent monopoly or excessive charges to consumers.
