Mikado Receives Knox.

New York Times 100 years ago today, September 12, 1912:
Replies Feelingly to Message of Condolence from President Taft.
TOKIO, Sept. 11.— Philander C. Knox. the Infante Alfonso of Spain, and Prince Henry of Prussia, respectively the special Ambassadors of the United States, Spain, and Germany to the funeral of the Emperor Mutsuhito, were received in audience to-day by Emperor Yoshihito.
The American Secretary of State, who was accompanied by the members of his suite, delivered to the Emperor an address of condolence from President Taft and the people of America, to which his Majesty feelingly responded.
Simultaneously with the social Ambassadors' audience with The Emperor, Mrs. Knox, accompanied by the American Ambassador, Mr. Bryan, was presented to the Empress Sadake, who graciously received her American visitor.
At the conclusion of the audience the entire Knox party visited the chamber in which Emperor Mutsuhito's body is lying. President Taft's wreath was placed beside the catafalque by Mr. Knox.
The special Ambassadors afterward took luncheon with Emperor Yoshihito and Prince Arthur of Connaught, the representative of King George at the funeral, who arrived this morning.
The Emperor to-day decorated Prince Henry of Prussia with the Chain of the Order of the Chrysanthemum and bestowed upon the Infante Alfonso the Grand Cordon of the same order.
