By Wireless 4,000 Miles.

New York Times 100 years ago today, February 7, 1913:
Government Operator in Alaska Heard Key West's Message.
SEATTLE, Wash., Feb. 6.— The United States Army wireless telegraph operator at Eagle, Alaska, heard the Government station at Key West, Fla., sending a message to Mare Island, Cal., on Dec. 18, according to information received by mail to-day. The operator at Eagle heard Key West's signals clearly, but the operator at Mare Island complained of static interference. The distance in the air line from Key West to Eagle is more than 4,000 miles. Climatic conditions in Alaska, the operators say, are ideal for wireless communication.
