Elder Diaz On Intervention.

New York Times 100 years ago today, March 14, 1913:
Exiled Dictator Says All Mexicans Would Unite Against It.
NAPLES, March 13.— Porfirio Diaz has received many messages from his followers urging him to return to Mexico and resume the leadership of affairs there, but the ex-President steadfastly has refused to do so, saying nothing except danger to the independence of his country would induce him to interfere in the present internal policy of the Republic. In a few days Gen. Diaz will go to Rome to thank King Victor Emmanuel for the Italian decoration conferred on him by his Majesty. The ex-President then will go to Nice, where he intends to rest awhile.
William H. Taft, when President, said Gen. Diaz, gave him full assurances that the United States was not planning intervention. but he continued:
"Nobody can tell what politics keeps in reserve or what the new American Administration may project.
"What is certain," added the General, "is that the whole of Mexico would stand like one man if threatened from abroad."
