New York Times 100 years ago today, May 21, 1913:
Reports of His Assassination Reach Albanians at Triest.
VIENNA, May 20.— Reports of the murder of Essad Pasha, who commanded the Turks at Scutari throughout the siege, have reached the Albanians at Triest, according to a dispatch to The Reichspost from that city.
The assassination is said to have taken place at Tirana, where Essad Pasha marched with many thousands of Turkish troops after the evacuation of Scutari and formed a provisional Albanian Government.
It is thought that the murder may have been the result of a blood vendetta and that it was carried out by relatives of Gen. Hassan Riza Pasha, who preceded Essad as commandant of Scutari and whose death there was laid to the account of Essad.
