New York Times 100 years ago today, August 6, 1913:
Northerners at First Victorious, but Later Lose Several Junks.
SHANGHAI, Aug. 5.— Northern troops under the command of Gen. Hsu inflicted a severe defeat on the Chin-Kiang garrison yesterday.
Terms were then made with Gen. Hsu for the re-establishment of the Government administration in the town, tout late last night, finding the Northerners occupying positions on the Chin-Kiang side of the river, contrary to the agreement entered into with Gen. Hsu, the garrison attached the Northerners and sank several of their junks. Two hundred Northerners were killed in the fighting.
All was quiet in Shanghai to-day.
