New Submarine Record.

New York Times 100 years ago today, September 7, 1912:
The F1 Dives 283 Feet and Stays at That Depth for Ten Minutes.
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 6.— The United States Navy submarine F1 obtained a world's record after diving to a depth of 283 feet off Point Diablo, in San Francisco Bay, yesterday.
The submarine remained at this depth for ten minutes, cruising at a speed of six knots. Under the command of Lieut. James B. Howell, the twenty-six men of the crew went about their duties while the hull creaked and groaned beneath the enormous pressure.
