France's Big Deficit.

New York Times 100 years ago today, May 6, 1913:
Government Must Find $160,000,000 Despite New Taxes.
PARIS, May 5.— Analyzing the report of the Budget Committee of the Senate, prepared by Senator Emile Almond, the Temps to-day reckons that France's deficits in 1912 and 1913, together with her Treasury notes or $533,000,000, due in June and September, will compel the Government to find $160,000,000 more than the receipts to meet the obligations of 1912, in which are included $20,000,000 made necessary by the projected three years' army service.
These deficits, the newspaper says, are in spite of the increased tax receipts and fresh taxes totaling $189,000,000 and the Government's net income from the tobacco monopoly in 1912, amounting to $101,000,000.
