Plans Ocean Flight.

New York Times 100 years ago today, May 10, 1913:
J. V. Martin Says He Will Try Atlantic Trip in Biplane Next August.
SAN FRANCISCO, May 9.— James V. Martin, who holds a pilot's license for the air and a master's license for the seas, announced on his arrival from the Hawaiian Islands to-day that he would attempt to cross the Atlantic from Newfoundland to Ireland next August in competition for Lord Northcliffe's prize. He says he will take his wife with him. She was Miss Lillian Irvine, and she contends that she was the first English woman to fly.
The airline Martin will attempt to follow is 1,635 miles long. He believes he can cover the distance without a stop. His machine is a French biplane.
