Submarines Off For Drill.

New York Times 100 years ago today, May 11, 1913:
Hurry Order Merely Intended to Test Alacrity of the Crews.
WASHINGTON, May 10.— The submarines flotilla has started from Newport for Norfolk for drill in Chesapeake Bay and off the Virginia Capes.
The "hurry up" order sent to Newport last night was intended to test the. readiness of the officers and men to respond to an emergency call. The order probably would not have been issued had it been known at Headquarters that the submarine ball was on at Newport.
