German Air Contest Ends.

New York Times 100 years ago today, May 19, 1913:
Prince Henry Distributes Prizes and Praises Aviators.
STRASSBURG, May 18.— The Prince Henry aviation contest, which began at Wiesbaden on May 11, with thirty-two officer pilots and several amateurs entered, ended here to-night. Lieut. Canter, the winner of the contest, received three prizes, including the Emperor's prize for the best aggregate achievement. The route included Wiesbaden, Cassel, Coblenz, Carlsruhe, Strassburg, and Freiburg.
After the distribution of the prizes the aviators attended a banquet at which Prince Henry of Prussia spoke of the remarkable progress of German aviators. The aeroplane, he said, was to the army what the torpedo boat was to the navy. The aerial military reconnoisance at Pforzheim yesterday, he added, was memorable for German aviation.
