Nicaragua for the Alliance.

New York Times 100 years ago today, July 23, 1913:
By Cable to the Editor of The New York Times.
MANAGUA, Nicaragua, July 22. — Answering your cablegram of yesterday, I consider that the convention to which you make reference [the proposed submission of Nicaragua to the direction of the United States in certain particulars] favors the mutual interests of Nicaragua and the United States. Setting on a firm basis the friendly relations between the two countries, it guarantees the independence of the country and of the Administration, as well as the peace and prosperity of the republic, and it insures its position in the world in view of the new relations into which these countries will come by the opening of the Panama route and the possible construction of the Nicaragua canal.
        ADOLFO DIAZ, President of Nicaragua.
