"Rumors Of War."

New York Times 100 years ago today, November 25, 1912:
Here are some facts of capital importance which it is well to keep in mind in considering the rumors of impending war that fill the air:
Austria-Hungary will not fight Russia unless backed by both her associates in the Triple Alliance, Germany and Italy.
Russia will not fight Austria-Hungary unless backed by her ally, France, and her friend Great Britain.
It lies, therefore, within the power of any one of four Governments to veto action that would lead to a general conflict. It will not do to say that this makes war impossible. It is plain that it makes it highly improbable. As war, whatever its outcome, would be an incalculable calamity for all Europe, the responsibility for causing or permitting it is an appalling one from which the statesmen of the four Powers we have named must shrink.
