Canada Abandons Navy.

New York Times 100 years ago today, June 15, 1913:
Government Orders Its One Cruiser Dismantled and Docked.
HALIFAX, N.S., June 14.— Canada's Navy on the Atlantic is to be disbanded. Orders were received here to-day from Ottawa to dismantle the cruiser Niobe. All the Canadian recruits have been discharged and the British naval officers, pensioners, and reserve men will return to England next month. These men were loaned to Canada to instruct the men enlisted here.
The Niobe will be tied up at one of the dock yard piers and will not likely be placed in service again while the present government is in power. The cruiser was purchased by the Laurier Government from the British Admiralty, and her full crew comprised 700 officers and men. She is of 11,000 tons, has 16,500 horse power, and carries 16 15-inch guns.
