New Submarine Down 36 Hours.

New York Times 100 years ago today, June 12, 1913:
Six Men at Sea's Bottom — Smoked, Chatted, and Played Cards — Felt No Discomfort.
Special to The New York Times.
LOS ANGELES, June 11.— Promptly at 5 o'clock this afternoon the Cage submarine boat, which sank to the bottom of Long Beach Harbor Tuesday morning at 5 o'clock, rose to the surface, thus establishing a new world's record for submergence in submarines— a record of thirty-six hours, as against twenty-four made by the Government boat Octopus in 1907.
The six men in the new diver slowly crawled out of the top hatch, the inventor, Mr. Cage, first. Lined up on deck, the six heard the cheering of thousands and the shrill whistles of the many steamers and tugboats in the harbor. At this time moving-picture machines were active.
All six men said they were "In first-class shape, although sleepy." None had secured more than an hour's sleep since going to the bottom and all left at once for their homes to rest.
General Manager Guy Hoopengarner of the submarine company, who acted as telegraph operator, was on constant duty during the entire time, and to-day sent messages to President Wilson, Secretary of the Navy Daniels, many other notables, and several Eastern newspapers announcing the victory achieved by his company's boat. Cable and telegraphic connection with the Cage was maintained throughout.
"Never at any time," said Mr. Cage after he stepped on land, "was there the slightest fear for our safety. We played cards until we got sick of the game, then we smoked, told stories and tried to sleep, but it got awfully monotonous, and we were mightily glad when 5 o'clock came around this evening. I think we have set a record that will stand for some time."
The new boat differs from other types in having gasoline motors which, by a special exhaust device, are able to run while the vessel is submerged without polluting the air for the crew.
