"The Colonels' Canal."

New York Times 100 years ago today, June 19, 1913:
To the Editor of The New York Times:
    When the canal across the Isthmus of Panama is completed, it is to be hoped that a distinctive name will be given to the great waterway, since its successful construction is the product of American enterprise and American skill. A short and appropriate name would be the Colonels' Canal. This would commemorate the three Colonels who have been most prominent in the accomplishment of the greatest achievement of our time:
        Col. Roosevelt, who took it;
        Col. Goethals, who built it;
        Col. Gorgas, who sanitated it.
