Garrison Revolts, Seizes Matamoras.

New York Times 100 years ago today, February 18, 1913:
Force of Regulars Declares for Diaz and Takes the Town Without a Shot.
STOPS TRAVEL OVER BORDER
Rumor Is Current That the Troops at Rio Bravo and Reynos Have Also Deserted Madero.
BROWNSVILLE, Texas, Feb. 17.— Without serious resistance, Matamoras, the town across the Rio Grande from here, passed into the hands of Mexican rebels at 5 o'clock this morning. This is the second border town to be occupied by insurrectos since the Diaz revolt, the other being Nuevo Laredo.
Matamoras was taken by soldiers of the garrison who declared officially for Diaz and shut off the ferry and bridges from the American side "to avoid any pillaging or disturbance" from lawless elements.
A company of soldiers were stationed at the international bridge and a company of rurales at the ferry, and an order was issued, forbidding the crossing of passengers at either point.
Later the international bridge was opened, and the Americans, who were caught on the other side, were allowed to return to Brownsville during the forenoon.
Officers under the Madero Government who were arrested, upon taking oath of allegiance to Diaz were released and in most cases took their old positions. It is rumored that the soldiers at Rio Bravo and Reynos have joined the Diaz movement.
