Taft Arrives At Panama.

New York Times 100 years ago today, December 25, 1912:
Gives Orders to Let Men of Warships See the Canal.
    COLON, Dec. 24.— President Taft and his party arrived here this morning on board the United States battleship Arkansas. They landed at 8 o'clock. The party includes the President and Mrs. Taft, Charles P. Taft, Jr., Miss Louise Taft, Charles D. Hilles and Mrs. Hilles, Beekman Winthrop and Mrs. Winthrop, Major T. L. Rhoads, U.S.A., aid de camp; and Lieut. Commander J. W. Timmons, U.S.N.
    The trip from Key West was an uneventful one. The weather was fine, and the sea smooth throughout the voyage.
    The United States Minister H. Percival Dodge, a number of canal officials, and President Taft and party were the guests to-day of Col. G. W. Goethals at Culebra. To-morrow evening they are to attend a dinner given by the American Minister, and a afterward a ball in the palace of President Belisario Porras of Panama.
    President Taft, before landing sent a wireless dispatch to Col. Goethals asking him to have special trains in readiness as 2,000 bluejackets and all on board the battleships Arkansas and Delaware, except the prisoners, are to have an opportunity of inspecting the canal during their visit.
