Tried To Wreck Express.

New York Times 100 years ago today, December 23, 1912:
Lehigh Train Narrowly Escaped Ditching from Ties on the Track.
Special to The New York Times.
BINGHAMTON, N.Y., Dec. 22.— An attempt to wreck the Black Diamond Express on the Lehigh was made near Fenton's on Thursday, the attempt having been kept secret by the railroad officials in an effort to discover the perpetrators.
While running at a high rate of speed between Fenton's and Burdette the locomotive struck two ties that had been wedged between the rails. The engineer observed the obstruction and applied the emergency brakes, and this action saved the train. The first tie was hurled high in the air and the engine pilot slid the second one between the rails. No arrests have yet been made.
