Americans In Peril; Warship To Mexico.

New York Times 100 years ago today, January 16, 1913:
Expected Rebel Attack on Acapulco Causes the Denver to be Sent There.
BRITISH CRUISER IS THERE
Will Protect All Foreigners Till Our Warship Arrives — Garrison to Defend Town.
Special to The New York Times.
MEXICO CITY, Jan. 15.— Americans in Acapulco are menaced with an attack by Radillo at the head of a force of 500 rebels, well armed. Americans from the Costa Grande district, north of Acapulco, gathered on the coast and wore taken to that port by a tug sent for them.
Officials of the Government deny that the situation is serious on the ground that no reports have been received from the Governor or the military. At the instance of foreign representatives Gen. Rosaya is being rushed from Chilpancingo with a large column, and is expected to arrive to-morrow.
The British sloop Shearwater has promised to protect all foreigners until the arrival of the Denver. The garrison at Acapulco is thought to be sufficient to withstand an attack of artillery. It is so situated that it can be easily defended. The volunteer organization in Acapulco agrees to defend the city in case the rebel leaders fail to guarantee life and property, but if the latter only wish to take the town they will not fight.
The commander of the garrison is said to be unable to protect foreigners, but reported officially that he could handle the situation. Dispatches today indicate no attack on the town yet. It is believed here that it is useless to ask the Government for protection. Foreigners should leave unless protected by foreign warships. The Government's promises are mistrusted.
It is rumored here that the rebels are awaiting a large shipment of arms and ammunition, and it is thought that they will retire from the coast region when they receive them. It is impossible for the Government to maintain a large force there, as all troops are needed inland.
